Speeches and Quotations
It’s always good to start or end a speech with a quotation. This is usually a quotation from someone a bit famous that can underline your message emphatically as well as adding a little gravitas and experience. My favourite quote of all time is from Winston Churchill. It’s from a speech he gave to his old school during the Second World War. It is brilliant for motivational and inspirational speeches. He simply said, ‘Never, no matter what the odds, ever give in.’
It also goes against the grain of another favourite speech quote of mine from Rosita Perez. I like this one a lot and you can apply it so many aspects of life. It reads, ‘If the horse is dead, it’s time to get off’. Quite.

Speaking of Friendship
Friendship is a brilliant thing. Yet how often to we actually sit down or stand up and pay tribute to that special friend?
We know that without that friend the world would be a different place. Even us chaps can admit that much.
A birthday speech is one brilliant way to do it. Friendship is a great theme. Speeches given at birthdays can be a great way to mix gentle humour with an anecdote or two. This type of speech is directly given to the birthday boy or girl. It can be as sentimental as you like.
The only rule is that you let your heart rule your head. Let the recipient be in no doubt of the esteem in which they are held.
Add yourself to the list. It will be the best birthday present you have even given - and the cheapest.

Interminable speeches
Going down (I’d like to know when it was ever up) in popularity according to the New Zealand Sunday Star Times magazine this week are Interminable speeches. I quote ‘If public speaking is our greatest human phobia - why is it so hard to get the speakers off?’
The public speakers obvioulsy have to yet discover this blog. Better still hire a speech writer.
I read somewhere too that some people rate their fear of speaking next to their fear of death itself. Well at least that is putting some perspective on the matter. After all, you’re a long time dead. If anyone out there has a worst speech story or scenario, send it in and we can set up a file for the best or worst cases.

I don’t know if celebrated Irish author James Joyce was ever in demand as inspirational or motivational speaker. His famous twentieth century introspective masterpiece OR the most famous book that no one has read, ULYSEES recently topped another poll for the greatest book ever written. I can’t even begin to imagine what an after dinner speech by Joyce would sound like. Surely it would last for days and be miserable and utterly interminable.
How gratifying then that Brazillian author Paulo Cohelo’s THE ALCHEMIST comes in at number two. This simple, down to earth tale of fate, faith and chance is the most motivational and inspring book I have ever read. No doubt its author is much in demand as a speech giver. You would expect to come away feeling inspired, moved, motivated and even happy to be alive. I know which book, I’d rather read and who I would rather listen to speak.
