The Obama’s aren’t the only ones to move house lately.

Author: Niamh

The Obama’s aren’t the only ones who have moved house lately. Millions of people all over the world move house every year. It’s a very stressful time. In fact it ranks with death and divorce as one of the most stressful times in our lives. It’s when you have to decide whether to bring your old school notes when you move or whether you should sell that old dining room table. It’s when you decide that recycling is not a load of old rubbish and you try to find someone who would actually be glad to use the items that won’t fit in your new pad. Not everyone has mountains of stuff to move. The victims of war or natural disasters, if they are lucky, have to set up home again in tents supplied by aid agencies. They will have lost everything belonging to them. For the rest of us, though, moving means packing and unpacking and finding a place for the rocking chair your grandmother left you not to mention all the papers you have which appear to be more numerous than the ones in the national archives. It’s a time when you promise yourself that you will definitely simplify your life. So you sort and shift and settle down in your new home. Then its time to celebrate and listen while your guests give those housewarming speeches and toasts to the new occupants.

It’s nearly time for the turkey

Author: Niamh

It’s nearly time for the turkey. Whether it’s at Thanksgiving or at Christmas most of us like to feast with our families and friends. The trouble is that for many people it doesn’t stop at that. Obesity is a growing problem in the main caused by Junk food, that is so handy for those of us with busy lives but if we are honest it doesn’t take longer to prepare a salad than to heat those oven chips. Vitamins are essential to health and a good breakfast is the best possible start to the day. A smoothie makes much more sense than drinking coke and nowadays they are available in most stores. If you invest in a juicer you can easily get your five portions of fruit and vegetables a day in one easy drink. Good food affects your body and your health. It also helps your brainto function better.. So there is one other good reason to eat well and that is by doing so you can eat your way to genius.

November is the month for remembering

Author: Niamh

In the Catholic faith November is the month of the dead. It’s a time when we remember those loved ones we have lost. That, of course, is not something that is particular to any one faith or religion. Perhaps, though, it should be a time too when we consider how lucky we are to have loved ones who are still with us. A family re-union might be time to
express gratitude for family and friends. A grandmother’s 80th birthday is obviously an occasion to say how much she means in the life of the family. A father’s retirement day is the opportunity to say thank you for working so hard for us all the years. In a busy world we are inclined to take others for granted and, however much we love them, we rarely express that love. So if it is your own wedding anniversary tell those gathered to celebrate how much your spouse means to you. There is a saying that feeling appreciation and not expressing it is like wrapping a gift and not giving it. So go on, give that that gift. Some November you’ll be glad you did.

Show your gratitude

Author: Niamh

“God gave you a fit of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say “Thank you?” This thought provoking saying by William Arthur Ward should make us think about gratitude and whether we express it or not.
In Britain and in continental Europe many churches have a harvest festival ceremony every year where parishioners give thanks for the fruits of the earth. Yet historically Thanksgiving Day as we now know it in the United States was first known when Spaniards landed in St. Augustine and said a mass of thanksgiving for their safe arrival. In Canada victory over enemies was the theme of some of the first thanksgiving days although today, officially, it is a day to thank God for his mercies. Nowadays it is often a more secular feast in America and Canada yet despite the football games and Macy’s parade families still gather together and celebrate and, whatever their religious beliefs, are thankful that they have such holiday and such a family reunion.  So whether you are letting off fireworks, having a barbeque or dining in style remember to stop for a second to say “Thank you.”

Tell your parents what you think of them

Author: Niamh

Most of us love our parents but how many of us express that love? Yet your father’s birthday, your step-mother’s birthday or your mother’s retirement are ideal days on which to say a few loving words. In fact any family occasion such as a family re-union gives you an opportunity to express your feelings for them. Weddings, of course, being the sentimental occasions they are, are the ideal time to thank them for all they have done for you. So whether you are the groom or the bride make it their big day too by expressing how much they mean to you. This also applies of course if you are the best man who is son of the groom or indeed the son of the bride. Finally, if you have not told them you love them before they die a thoughtful eulogy for mother or appreciative eulogy for father will be a fitting tribute to well loved parents.

Holy Days

Author: Niamh

Confirmation day and first Holy Communion days are very important milestones in the life of a child and in that of his or her family. They are often days when grandparents and distant relative travel for a family re-union. Not everybody thinks of giving a speech and a toast but it is a lovely idea to say something to commemorate the special day in the family history. The speech can touch on the child’s growing years and on the importance of faith in his or her life. It can stress how important the child is to those who love him or her. It should be very personal with a touch of humour but, overall, with the message that he or she is very much loved. It should end with a toast for the future. Most of us remember those special days but how much nicer the memory would be if someone thought to speak about us and how special we were.
