Happy holiday speeches have to cover a multitude of events

Author: Niamh

Happy holiday speeches have to cover a multitude of events. Some are given at the Christmas office party either by the boss or a guest at the function. Other holiday speeches are given where Christmas as such is not celebrated but before the staff enjoy a holiday break. There are also club or association Christmas speeches where someone on the committee wishes the members the compliments of the season. Whatever the occasion the speeches will all have something in common. They will speak of the contribution of those present. There will be words of thanks and appreciation. There will also be a look to the future and the challenges it presents. As befits the holiday season the speeches should be light-hearted in tone and speak of the enjoyment to be had with visiting and gift giving. Christmas is a time for nostalgia and so in Christmas speeches it is good to mention old friends and family gatherings. Obviously the holiday season is one too where families celebrate occasions such as Hanukkah and Kwanzaa and there family re-union speeches cover what needs to be said. The holiday period includes the New Year and New Year speeches will speak of times past and that the best that is yet to come. In a diverse world with diverse cultures the term happy holiday means a lot to a lot of people.

We often give funeral eulogies for our mothers or fathers

Author: Niamh

We often give funeral eulogies for our mothers or fathers. Yet somehow we often neglect to give eulogies for a brother or sister. Certainly aunts and uncles are rarely eulogised nor are step fathers or step mothers. Whatever their own immediate families chose to say they would be gratified if a step-child or a niece or nephew also chose to give a eulogy from their own point of view. Certainly too grieving parents would be touched to hear a brother or sister speaking about their sibling in a loving and public way. Public is the word to use because a eulogy is a public goodbye. It’s an acknowledgement that the deceased was special in some way. It’s a mark of respect for what the decease achieved during his or her lifetime. A eulogy is a summary of a life and how it was spent. It speaks of the deceased and what he or she meant to the speaker and to others who are mourning him or her. Most of us have no idea what others really think of us. In fact if ten people described us we would hardly recognise ourselves. So it is with a eulogy. We describe someone as others see them. We tell of their kindness, their compassion and their generosity and in doing so we give comfort to the family who are experiencing the loss of a loved one. We may tell a story we have heard about the deceased or describe an incident in which they played a part. All this brings balm to the hearts of those w ho are suffering. So whether the deceased is a colleague, an aunt or a step-father say a few kind words at their funeral. It’s the last chance you will get to tell the world how special he or she was.

Friendship, it is said, is a gift we give ourselves

Author: Niamh

Friendship, it is said, is a gift we give ourselves. If we are wise we will cherish and nurture that gift. Real friendship cannot thrive on neglect. It needs those phone calls and those meetings. A friend needs your interest and your concern. Friends need your understanding and sometimes, your disagreement. Real friends can, you see, agree to differ and what you may say honestly and openly should not affect your relationship. We meet our friends in many different ways. Some we can trace back to childhood. Others we meet through sport, night classes or in the office. We can strike up friendships at school, at college or at a party. Shared interests of course cement friendship and so being in a religious group together or on the same team will mean you have more in common. You will, therefore, have ideas to discuss and thoughts to explore. A real friend is one that stands by you when you are in trouble. If your business fails or you have to go to hospital your friends will be there to support you. A friend has a listening ear, a ready understanding and will be sympathetic to your needs. Probably the most important ingredient in a friendship is shared laughter. If you can still remember funny incidents years later your friendship will have stood the test of time. To have friends you need to be one. So if you want to have that invaluable gift in life learn about friends and how to make them and keep them.

The royal wedding will be slightly different in some ways

Author: Niamh

The royal wedding will be slightly different in some ways. For one thing it will cost a lot more than most weddings. The television cameras of the world will be there too to capture every moment. But what will be said in private? Father of the groom Prince Charles will probably say a few words at the reception. He’s quite used to speaking in public but this being a sentimental occasion will he get a frog in his throat as he remembers the mother of the groom? The father of the bride will surely find the occasion a bit more nerve wracking. After all he will not be used to addressing the crowned heads of Europe. Nonetheless like most fathers he will probably want to say how much he loves his daughter and how proud he is of her. Like all weddings too it will be expected that the best man will make a memorable and witty speech and if Prince Harry is best man he will have plenty of ammunition to fire a few salvos at his brother. There is no doubt but that speakers at this wedding will have any help they need to prepare their speeches. After all this wedding will be history in the making. However it is expressed though the sentiments will be those of any other wedding. You see whether for royalty or commoner wedding speeches are about family, commitment and love.

Say it in a speech

Author: Niamh

Say it in a speech. Tell them you love them, you respect them or you admire them and give the reason why. That’s good advice for anyone who has a birthday, wedding anniversary or in fact any other special occasion coming up. Of course you may not have intended to give a speech. You may hate speaking in public. Yet by forgetting your qualms and saying a few words you can really make someone else’s day very special. So tell your parents that they have given you a very special upbringing on their silver or, in fact, any anniversary. You might not usually tell your brother that you love him but telling him how much his concern and support mean to you on could make his birthday. If it is your daughter’s Bat Mitzvah day tell her just what joy she and delight she has brought into your life. If your neighbours are leaving and you are present at a farewell party say what a pleasure it was to have such wonderful neighbours when you are wishing them well. If it’s graduation day and you are having a party tell your son or daughter how proud you are of them. You don’t have to be an orator to say these things but a few lines straight from the heart can mean so much. Express your admiration and love because we all need to feel appreciated. So go on say it in a short speech and give a memory for life.

Thanksgiving isn’t the only time we should give thanks

Author: Niamh

Thanksgiving isn’t the only time we should give thanks. It is fitting of course that we should celebrate on Thanksgiving Day and express our gratitude both for our families and for our standard of living. Speechwriters and speakers though should also give thanks on many different occasions. On Veterans Day, for instance, their speeches should give thanks for those who have fought as members of our armed forces. A Boss or C.E.O. often uses the Christmas Staff party or Happy Holiday function as an occasion to express gratitude to the staff for their contribution during the year. At a formal dinner there is often a vote of thanks to the speaker and of course the groom usually expresses his appreciation for all his parents have done for him during his growing years. It is very nice too to hear an expression of recognition to a teacher by parents or students. The outgoing President of a charitable or professional organisation should include some words of thankful praise to those who have helped during his or her term of office. A good M.C. will also give thanks to both delegates and speakers at the end of a conference. Everyone likes to be appreciated and a few appreciative and sincere words in any speech or toast will give that feel good factor to the recipient. So whether you are speaking to volunteers or to your own football team saying thanks for the effort costs nothing and means a lot.

Graduation Day is a day for caps and gowns photographers and parchments

Author: Niamh

Graduation Day is a day for caps and gowns photographers and parchments. It is a day to celebrate achievement. In different countries at different times of the year colleges and universities will have ceremonies to mark the day. Quite often too families too will have a graduation party for a son or daughter. Deans of universities or heads of colleges give graduation speeches repeatedly and sometimes must wish for something new to say. Guest speakers may speak of their own work or success but other than that not know what to say. Above all graduation speeches should be motivational. They should look back at what the students have accomplished and look forward to what they can accomplish in the future. The speeches should have a touch of humour because students appreciate humour. They should remind students of the debt they owe to those who have helped them reach graduation. They should speak of the world and the opportunities it offers to new graduates. They should, above all, remind students that although they have graduated that learning is ongoing and that in a competitive world they will have to keep updating their skills. Put simply a good graduation speech is a speech that will influence a graduate for life.

The Casino isn’t the only place we gamble

Author: Niamh

The Casino isn’t the only place we gamble. Every day we gamble with our lives on the roads and in our homes and hospitals. In fact life is one long gamble yet we never seem to see it that way. We always expect it to go along uneventfully until something happens to shake us out of our complacency. In the case of weddings making a speech seems to be a bigger gamble than marriage itself. That is if you are the father of the bride and expected to give a loving, witty and memorable speech about your daughter. Then and only then do you realise how little you actually know about her, her hobbies and activities. Quite often you have to consult the oracle or her mother in other words, because somehow women are expected to know these things. With her support you can get together your ideas and draft your speech. What are the things you should say and what should you leave out? It’s probably safer not to mention the fact that she had already brought home a dozen different boyfriends for your approval. It’s safe enough to mention the fact that she had a teddy bear she called Snoozy that she insisted on bringing everywhere with her. In fact you could probably mention that it is undoubtedly in her case ready for her honeymoon trip. Every bride is different and the same applies to every wedding speech. Some things are constant however and saying how much you love your daughter applies to all daughters of whatever race or creed. You can bet on that.

It’s summertime

Author: Niamh

It’s summertime and that means more outdoor events, more prize-givings and more speeches. You may for instance be asked to speak at the opening of charity/fundraiser/fete. What you will say depends of course, on the charity and the event in questions. Certainly though you will have to speak graciously of the organizers and welcome those who attend the event and urge them to support the cause as generously as possible. You might be at a school sports and find you have to speak about the importance of sportsmanship and to speak motivationally about losers as well as winners. Summertime is also the time for family re-unions and you should speak of the importance of keeping in touch. You might mention too the differences between the different family members but how much you have in common too. There may be a reason for the re-union such as a golden wedding anniversary and if so, that too should be included in the speech. You could possibly have to present prizes at a golf outing and if so your speeches should talk about the reason for the event and your pleasure in presenting the prizes. Lots of things happen in summertime and each one of them calls for a speech. So set the mood and enhance the day with the words that you say.

Has it ever occurred to you how many things speeches can do?

Author: Niamh

Has it ever occurred to you how many things speeches can do? Your eulogy for a father for instance can bring tears to the eyes of mourners. Family re-union speeches can bring a family closer together. Informative speeches can tell your audience the facts about Eczema or Alzheimers. The words you use can persuade, cajole or empower. You can help people to overcome shyness or develop leadership qualities. With the right words you can change a gathering into a real occasion or even change a life. Words can have a magical effect on people. You might, for instance, persuade someone normally very self-centred to become a volunteer. The right words used at a graduation ceremony can inspire students for life while the right words at a political gathering can change the course of a country. You can use your speech to make people feel good about themselves or to make them think. So if you are asked to speak in public don’t be afraid. Instead look on it as the opportunity to reach out and touch others.
