There are a lot of stressed kids in our schools

Author: Niamh

There are a lot of stressed kids in our schools. According to a recent survey 44% of children feel stressed about how well they are doing in school. The real question is who causes that stress? Is it parents pushing them beyond their ability. Is it teachers pressurising them to do well in exams? Do they inflict it on themselves by setting themselves unrealistic goals?
In many cases teachers can help to make lessons a more positive experience. They have to think about the benefits using the power of positive feedback to stimulate and encourage students. It is also important that they create equity in the classroom because children have a great sense of fairness and if they feel they are being treated fairly and equally they will respond better. Teachers can also speak to parents about pushing children by explaining the need for lots of encouragement instead of pressure. They can also explain to parents that they must be realistic about the abilities of a particular child. Some may always be bad at maths but great at dancing. Everyone has talents but they are all different and just because your dad is a doctor doesn’t mean that science will be your best subject.
Above all though children should be encouraged to discover their own particular talents and skills whatever they may be.  Maybe they have leadership qualities and, if so, could be encouraged to go for school head or captain of the football team… Perhaps they are charismatic rather than academic and their abilities as public speakers or organisers of a youth club might be explored. High achievers aren’t always the happiest children. Those who feel valued for what they are as people are much more likely to be content.
Above all children should have the opportunity to talk about their worries and to get the help necessary to deal with them. It might be difficult for them to come straight out and talk to someone about their problems… With a little organisation debates or discussion groups on worrying topics can throw a lot of light on what children are thinking. With the right attitude to stress you can beat it.

Change for the better

Author: Niamh

Beating the recession is top of the agenda for most businesses these days. In these hard times, though, attitudes and systems that were suitable in better times no longer work. Managers and owners have to accept the challenge of change in business. It’s a time when you have to make innovation your business. It’s a time when you have to save costs yet take some well calculated risks. Those who have lost their jobs are often told to re-train now but such retraining within companies may mean keeping on staff by using existing workers more wisely. Beating that recession is in everyone’s interest so take a long hard look at what you do, consult your staff about their ideas and work together to win out in the end.

We are all leaders or followers

Author: Niamh

We are all leaders or followers. Naturally then a speech on leadership will be applicable on many speaking occasions. You may want to tell your audience about leadership - an acquired skill or about developing confidence/good leaderships. By doing so you may inspire a follower to turn into a leader. After all it is lack of self belief that makes people reluctant to take on the leadership mantle. Of course there are many kinds of leaders. You have military leaders, political leaders or you may want to show a business audience how to develop your leadership skills in an office. Whatever your audience, though, leadership is a relevant subject whether they know it or not before you speak.

There are many ways of saving a life

Author: Niamh

There are many ways of saving a life. You could try to learn swim it may save your life. It could also, of course, be the means of saving someone else’s life. Is first aid a matter of life or death? It could easily be. So if you were at the scene of a horrible accident and you were able to administer first aid wouldn’t you be glad you had bothered to learn? You are always being urged to be a blood donor and for the very good reason that you might save a life. In fact the life you save could be your own or that of a member of your family. If you joined an anti abortion lobby group you might well be able to save the life of an unborn baby. Even after your death you can help someone else if you are one of those people who carry organ donor cards. So you see saving a life isn’t just for heroes or heroines it’s for all of us.

Be a success somehow in some way

Author: Niamh

The victory of Yang in the Major shows that even the best can be beaten. That’s probably what makes sport so addictive. Even those who follow the leading teams know that every time their team plays there is a calculated chance that they will be beaten. They realise that however good their favourite players are there is always some who may be better. That is probably why leading sportspeople often retire at the top of their profession. They are only too aware that younger sportspeople are snapping at their heels. What Yang’s victory tells us is that if you strive for excellence you’ll be glad you did. You may not win a Major of course but you could succeed in some other way. You might get promotion or become captain of the local swimming club. It could be that you get top marks in some examination. Each one of us has some aspiration and it is consoling to know that there are opportunities for success for all of us. Tiger Woods will probably go on to win many more Majors. Like him you should challenge yourself and reap the rewards. Put simply never give up on your dreams.

January may be the start of the calendar year

Author: Niamh

January may be the beginning of the calendar year but for teachers and students everywhere their real year starts in the fall. Whether they are elementary school pupils or University students when summer ends studying begins. Just now classrooms are being cleaned and decorated, blackboards are being wiped and teachers and tutors are getting ready the work they will be doing during the forthcoming term. They might be thinking of inspirational speeches that will encourage their students to make more of the forthcoming year. They may, for instance, suggest that students should Think outside the box and be an original, It could be that they may be more practical and  advise students “Breakfast is the best way to kick-start your day”. They might even say “Improve your concentration” and suggest ways of doing this.
It’s much more likely, however, that they will concentrate on the generalities. Year after year they will ask students to do their best and to try harder. This is a pity because there are so many more interesting ways of captivating their audience and getting them to focus on the important things of life and to say never give up on your dreams.

Body language says a lot about you

Author: Niamh

It’s bad enough to lose a job through no fault of your own. It’s even worse to lose one because you said the wrong thing at an interview. Yet every day that’s what happens to job applicants simply because they use the wrong body language. In fact most of them are not aware that body language is, in fact, speaking without words. Most job applicants would know what they should and should not say verbally when going for an interview. They would do their research and find out as much as possible about the company. They would try to sound positive and upbeat about how they would suit the position. Yet they should remember that the gestures they are using also say something about them. Obviously employers know people may be nervous at an interview but they will also consider your ability to overcome such nerves. Interviews are about selling yourself and if you sell yourself as a twitchy foot-tapping bag of nerves or you cannot look the interviewer in the face you won’t make a sale. So study your body language and you will turn job interviews into job offers.

Weight of the nations talks will discuss weighty matters

Author: Niamh

It’s a sad reflection of our times. Half the world is starving yet the U.S. government is going to have “Weight of the nations” talks where they will discuss ways to reduce obesity and get people to walk get fit and have fun. There is no doubt about the fact that we need to do something about the health implications of obesity the government has a role to play of course but it’s really a matter of self discipline. We have to rethink our own lifestyles. In a time of economic crisis it is not going to be easy to change our jobs for instance yet part of the problem is long commutes that leave people too tired to do anything energetic in the evenings. So perhaps people should consider working locally or from home and having more time to keep fit. Certainly governments have a role to play in legislation regarding junk food and there should also be legislation regarding having compulsory sport or exercise in schools every day. Medical insurance might be higher for those who are overweight and more likely to have, say, heart attacks or diabetes. The bottom line is we cannot afford to treat the illnesses people have through no fault of their own. There is so much publicity about weight that we all know what we should do to keep fit. We should certainly penalise those who are overweight simply because they are greedy.

What teachers say when saying goodbye

Author: Niamh

Making an impression is one thing. Making a lasting impression is another. Yet it is something that teachers all try to do when saying goodbye to their classes at graduation time or at the end of the academic year. They hope that what they say will fire the imagination of their pupils and inspire or motivate them in their future lives. They may speak to those pupils about how to achieve success or how to develop potential. They may urge them to take up a hobby for life or take on a challenge such as working in the third world. They may speak about being patriotic or polishing up their leadership skills. It is conceivable that they will tell a story about a past pupil who is now famous. It is likely that they will encourage their pupils to be making the most of their live s and strive for excellence. They may speak about faith and the part it has in many lives. They will speak about having determination, accepting criticism and being creative. Their message will be simple “Whatever you are, be a good one.”

Everyone likes to be appreciated

Author: Niamh

Everyone likes to be appreciated. Yet while most of us are quick to criticise we are, unfortunately, much slower to praise or to thank. We know, deep down, of course, that we ought to express our thanks to certain people. That is probably what gave the greeting card industry the opportunity to cash in our sense of guilt by marketing such occasions as fathers’ day and mothers’ day.
At Christmas or at the end of the company year many executives do thank their staff in their happy holiday/staff motivational speeches. Companies also thank customers in with client appreciation speeches. By doing so they are responding to a human need and it is good business as well.
On a more personal level one of the couple celebrating their wedding anniversary will thank guests for gifts and good wishes. The same applies at birthdays where the birthday boy or girl often says a few words of thanks.
We often forget to say thank you to a teacher. Yet teachers are often one of the greatest influences in our lives. In fact, second only to our parents, they are often the people who determine who or what we become later on. Many of them spend long hours helping us with problems we may have with a certain subject. Certainly they often go beyond the call of duty in encouraging and helping their pupils. In fact they are often the mentor who means the most to us and certainly the schools that have good teachers should treasure them and express gratitude to them too. So if you’ll remember your teacher in later years say the right thing and he or she will remember you too.
