Golden wedding anniversaries are usually celebrated with great fuss and excitement

Author: Niamh

Golden wedding anniversaries are usually celebrated with great fuss and excitement. Silver wedding anniversaries too are often the cause for a family party. The other anniversaries such as pearl or ruby though are less likely to be celebrated. That’s a pity because in today’s world of quickie divorces any marriage that lasts for any length of time should be celebrated. That is not, of course, to say, that a husband and wife do not celebrate their anniversaries privately by having a meal out or going away for a holiday. Yet marriage is the bedrock of society and families and friends are affected by such a good marriage. So it is fitting that they should celebrate by saying “You are wonderful parents “or “You are special friends.” What they are really saying is that the marriage in question has meant something in their lives too. The couple may have been inspirational in showing them love in everyday action. They may have shown them how vows can be kept despite troubles and sorrows. They certainly have shown what commitment means. Their home may have been a place of refuge or comfort for you. So go on throw a surprise anniversary party for them to show that your world is a better place simply because of their marriage.

Say it in a speech

Author: Niamh

Say it in a speech. Tell them you love them, you respect them or you admire them and give the reason why. That’s good advice for anyone who has a birthday, wedding anniversary or in fact any other special occasion coming up. Of course you may not have intended to give a speech. You may hate speaking in public. Yet by forgetting your qualms and saying a few words you can really make someone else’s day very special. So tell your parents that they have given you a very special upbringing on their silver or, in fact, any anniversary. You might not usually tell your brother that you love him but telling him how much his concern and support mean to you on could make his birthday. If it is your daughter’s Bat Mitzvah day tell her just what joy she and delight she has brought into your life. If your neighbours are leaving and you are present at a farewell party say what a pleasure it was to have such wonderful neighbours when you are wishing them well. If it’s graduation day and you are having a party tell your son or daughter how proud you are of them. You don’t have to be an orator to say these things but a few lines straight from the heart can mean so much. Express your admiration and love because we all need to feel appreciated. So go on say it in a short speech and give a memory for life.

Keep it in the family

Author: Niamh

Keep it in the family. That could be a good rule for many speechwriters. After all there are plenty of family occasions where a speech is appropriate. There are times when what you say will be remembered and even cherished for years to come. Start at the beginning by giving a speech at your child’s christening or at his or her first birthday. Speaking of birthdays why not give a speech at your mother’s 60th or at your father’s 70th birthday? If either of them is retiring it’s a good excuse to have a party and say a few words about a life well spent juggling work and after the family. What about graduation day? It’s another time when what you say is important. If, sadly, your brother or sister dies a thoughtful eulogy given by you will give great comfort to the other family members. Loving words should not be limited to your immediate blood family either. The step-father of the bride might well express his love for his step-child at her wedding. Of course a wedding anniversary is definitely a time for a relevant toast. So if your parents are 50 years married speak out about those golden years. Finally families are precious so why not have a get together and say a few words about a family re-union and how important it is to keep in touch? Such speeches turn family milestones into intimate and memorable occasions.

It’s summertime

Author: Niamh

It’s summertime and that means more outdoor events, more prize-givings and more speeches. You may for instance be asked to speak at the opening of charity/fundraiser/fete. What you will say depends of course, on the charity and the event in questions. Certainly though you will have to speak graciously of the organizers and welcome those who attend the event and urge them to support the cause as generously as possible. You might be at a school sports and find you have to speak about the importance of sportsmanship and to speak motivationally about losers as well as winners. Summertime is also the time for family re-unions and you should speak of the importance of keeping in touch. You might mention too the differences between the different family members but how much you have in common too. There may be a reason for the re-union such as a golden wedding anniversary and if so, that too should be included in the speech. You could possibly have to present prizes at a golf outing and if so your speeches should talk about the reason for the event and your pleasure in presenting the prizes. Lots of things happen in summertime and each one of them calls for a speech. So set the mood and enhance the day with the words that you say.

A Golden wedding anniversary should be celebrated

Author: Niamh

A Golden wedding anniversary should be celebrated. Of course so too should a Ruby anniversary or indeed any wedding anniversary. After all what you are celebrating is family life and all that it means. In a world of marriage breakup it is good to see that some couples still keep their vows. Obviously such couples have had their problems and their disagreements. They wouldn’t be human otherwise but they see the bigger picture. They see marriage as the ideal and they keep true to their ideals and beliefs. Such couples trust one another. However much they may be tempted they remain true to each other. That is not to say that a man or a woman should endure beatings or abuse of course but these aren’t always the cause of marriage break up. Selfishness and extra marital affairs are other prime causes but however couples justify it to themselves they should remember that divorce harms children as well as marriage. So congratulations to those whose commitment and love are an example to all of us. They certainly earn those wedding anniversary parties and all those lovely gifts.

Golden wedding anniversaries are a once in a lifetime event

Author: Niamh

Golden wedding anniversaries are a once in a lifetime event. They speak of commitment and trust. They are a reason for celebrating with family and friends. They say that a couple has stuck to their wedding vows. They say, in a world where so many take the easy option, that some people choose to stick it out and survive the highs and lows of an average marriage. Celebrants will undoubtedly receive many cards and gifts but the nicest gift of all is the respect that others have for them for reaching this point in their lives. It’s a day when couples often renew their wedding vows and families throw anniversary parties. It’s a day when speeches say “Congratulations and well done.” Above all it’s a day when marriage, and what it really means, is honoured as the great institution for stability that it is.

This is the time of the year for a family re-union

Author: Niamh

This is the time of the year for a family re-union. Vacation time, you see, allows us time to go visiting. It’s the ideal time then to celebrate a family get together. There may be a special reason of course such as a golden wedding anniversary or a particular birthday. Sometimes though families like to gather simply because they are families and don’t often get the chance to meet up. Family members may speak individually to each other saying how good it is to meet. How much better though if someone expressed those feelings publicly by giving a little speech. Obviously such a speech should be informal as befits the occasion. It should speak of the differences between family members yet also of what binds them together. Such a speech may contain a story of some well known family incident which will make people laugh.  The speech might include a reference to family members who have passed exams, got married or had a baby. In other words the speech should be personal and about pride in the clan.

Anniversaries should be celebrated

Author: Niamh

Anniversaries should be celebrated. Whether it is the anniversary of a business, the anniversary of a school or a silver wedding anniversary the occasion is one which should be marked in a special way. Whatever kind of function used to celebrate a good speech will definitely add to the occasion.
Obviously should a speech should be positive in tone because it is about the success of that school, business or marriage It is about survival and growth. A touch of humour always adds to the speech as does reminiscence or two. After all it is a time to look back on the achievements over the number of years being celebrated.
It is also, of course, a time to be motivational and to look forward to the future of the couple, the school or the business in question. These are not the only anniversaries, of course, because all sorts of organisations such as sporting clubs, universities  or churches also have anniversaries and they too should be celebrated. After all in this instant age there is a lot to be said for organisations that stand the test of time. Finally, of course, the speech should end with a toast to the future.

Why are you giving your speech?

Author: Niamh

Why are you giving your speech? That’s the first question every public speaker should ask. It may be because it is you are the father of the groom and you want to tell your son how much you love and admire him. It could be because you abominate abortion and want the audience to see it as sinful too. You might just want to share your enjoyment of the Beatles by talking about them.
So the kind of speech you will give will depend greatly on its purpose. You may want to motivate people to donate blood or to walk to work. You could be suggesting ways that they could live life to the full. You could be talking at a church conference, a political gathering or a family party. So ask yourself why you are speaking and what you want to say. Obviously a lot will depend on your audience. If it is the golden wedding anniversary of your parents you r speech can include stories of family life. If you are a politician your speech should convey the beliefs of your party. If it is a church conference your speech might address moral issues. You cannot write an appropriate speech unless you first answer that important question “Why am I giving this speech”.

Personalise your party

Author: Niamh

Personalise your party.  That’s the secret of successful entertaining. It’s more important to put thought into the preparation than to spend a fortune on fancy foods. Take a son’s 40th birthday for instance. If he were a keen tennis player you could do up the room with his club colours and have the cake iced and decorated as a tennis court. Maybe ice cream deserts could be provided in the shape of tennis balls or the centrepiece of the tables might be tennis figurines. It’s all about using your imagination.
The father of the girl who is sweet sixteen might organise tapes of her favourite group to be played with the room decorated with all sorts of pictures of that group. The menu could be adapted so that the courses were labelled with the name of members of the group e.g.  Shane’s soup, Barry’s Beef. Perhaps her friends could be invited to dress up like the members of that group. Maybe you could get in touch with the group’s agent and arrange for her to get a special birthday message from them.
A couple who are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary might like the room decorated with newspaper headings over the years of their marriage. A notice board could show photos of family events since the time of their big day. Alternatively that notice board could show written wedding anniversary wishes from all their guests. A video message from absent friends might be another idea.
So take a theme based on the occasion in question. It might be a sporting theme or a sentimental one. It might involve doing a bit of background research such as digging up lost friends or collecting jokes about their hobby whether it be ballroom dancing or playing the trumpet. Whatever you choose to do surprise the person or the couple and really give the guests something to talk about. It’s a great way to get a party going and to give a memory.
