It’s often the cause of suicide.

Author: Niamh

It’s often the cause of suicide. It’s certainly the cause of marital strife. It definitely makes sufferers feel miserable. Today being Mental Health Day we should consider what we know about depression. More importantly we should consider what we can do about it. Probably the most important thing of all is to acknowledge that it exists. Secondly we should also acknowledge that it is not shameful to admit to feeling depressed. If we had TB or the measles we would go to the doctor. The same should apply to depression. After all it’s just another illness. If we don’t suffer ourselves we should be open to listening to other people’s problems and how they feel. Unemployment, for instance, can lead to depression. We have to ensure that those who are unemployed do not feel they are worthless. In our busy world we often don’t have time to listen or bother with others. We should because sufferers are basically crying out for help. From now on let us ensure that we listen and show them that somebody else cares. Today let us help them to find the help they need. Depression may strike you some day and then you too will be glad of a listening ear.
