Summer time and the living is easy.

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Summer time is coming and the living may be easy. It is certainly, though, a time for fairs and fetes. Someone has to declare them open and that person could be you. So you should start by welcoming the guests and speak about what the fair or fete means to the local community. You speak about the attractions at the fair and how it is a time for enjoyment and fun and maybe time to bag a bargain. You speak of the reason for it and thank the committee for the hard work that went into preparing it. Your speech should say something about the reason you are having the fete and what will be done with the funds raised. Overall your speech should make people feel good about themselves and good about supporting such a worthwhile cause. If it does your speech will be a success and hopefully, the funds raised will reflect this.

Charity speeches

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

There are hundreds on wonderful charities and no shortage of fundraising events. If you want to grab the attention of your audience you should speak from the heart and from your own personal experience. Say what it’s like to be in hospital for months. Tell people what a difference a special hospital unit would make to the children in your area. .Explain how difficult it is to drive miles for treatment. Wring their hearts and their purse strings.

Raising funds

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

There are thousands of good causes and an equal number of appeals. So you should tell one story about how each member of your audience can personally make a difference to your one chosen charity. Involve them in what you are trying to do. Talk about the progress that is being made with their help. Urge them to continue helping. Then leave them with the feel good factor that comes from doing something for others.

Team Talk

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

The chairman of the amateur football club wanted me to write a few words for his annual general meeting. Obviously he wanted to praise the work done by his coaches. He wanted to talk about the success of the various teams during the year. He also wanted to point out that some teams were not doing as well as could be expected and he wanted to suggest, tactfully, ways they could improve. He needed to address the general membership about the support they could give the club and about the urgent need for fundraising. He said that, overall, he’d like to speak about the whole ethos of the club, how it had enriched many lives and to lay out the challenges it faced. He wanted to end on a positive note so that everyone would go home proud to be a member of the club and willing to volunteer their services in some way. My challenge was to see that the speech coaxed busy people into believing that they could spare the time to become involved in such a worthwhile organisation. He had sold it to me, now it was my job to sell it to others. I hope I can score with this one.

Spare a dime

Monday, March 26th, 2007

There are so many charities it is difficult to make an original type appeal for funds. Your speech needs to be motivational, showing exactly what will be done with the donations you hope to get. Make it personal too saying that the wheel chair you can buy with the funds will help Mary join the local youth club or your funds will change John’s life by enabling him to travel to Russia for the treatment he needs for his illness. Motivate your audience to make a contribution and help them to emphatise with those in need.
